“Tour the King of Rocks”

Description

Standing at 3841m Monviso has been dubbed the “King of Rocks”. Clearly visible from many vantage points in Piedmont, Monviso stands alone in the Western Alps. On his conquest for Rome, Hannibal is said to have crossed the very valleys surrounding its base. Whether you desire to trace the great Po river to it’s origins, or take in this majestic “King” from all angles this tour offers something for any avid hiker. Alpine cooking, cozy rifugi, great hiking trails, and breathtaking scenery all combine to make this tour the perfect adventure.

From Pian del Re (2020m) the loop can be completed in 3 to 4 days. Some professional athletes complete the trail in one day, but we aren’t in that much of a rush. From here flows the Po river, the longest in Italy, crossing the entire plains of Padana and eventually flowing into the Adriatic sea. The trail is well traveled but is popular mostly among French hikers.

Day 1 – Pick up from Starting point, either Turin or Milan, by your personal Guide. Stop for lunch in Saluzzo and enjoy a tour around one of the most beautiful small towns in Italy. Check into accommodation.

Day 2 – Lunch in Crissolo. Then the hike begins, parting from Pian del Re working towards Rifugio Quintino Sella. This is a protected area known as Riserva Naturale Speciale e Area Attrezzata Pian del Re. Keep on the look out for Ibex, hawks, and groundhogs. Take in the enormity of the wilderness, the crystal clear blue-green alpine lakes, or the famous contorted pine trees.

Day 3 – The trail to Rifugio Vallanta takes hikers up rocky alpine terrain and through a mountain pass between Punta Malta and Punta Dante before descending back down into the Varaita valley. Rest easy on arrival to Rifugio Vallanta and feast on hot polenta with cheese or wild boar and wine and/or beer.

Day 4 – The last leg of the trial passes through France. Exchange a few words of broken French with employees at the Rifugio du Viso before completing the loop at Pian del Re.
